I have trained as an Arts Award Explore, Discover, Bronze, Silver and Gold Adviser and I am qualified to support young people to achieve these awards. The Arts Award is a bit like the Duke of Edinburgh Award but specifically for the Arts.
These award’s support young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. The programme develops their creativity, leadership and communication skills and is open to anyone aged 5 to 25. Arts Award embraces all interests and backgrounds, while working towards an award young people learn to work independently, helping them to prepare for further education and employment. Arts Award motivates and celebrates young people’s artistic achievements. Young people can achieve an award through any arts, media or cultural activity, developing knowledge and understanding of their chosen art forms. Arts Award is managed by Trinity College London.
The awards-
Discover (age 5 upwards)
Young people identify that a range of art forms make up the arts, take part in different arts activities, find out about artists and their work and share their arts discoveries with others.
Explore (age 7 Upwards)
Young people take part in different arts activities and record what inspires them, experience the
work of artists and arts organisations, create art work and present their exploration to others
Bronze (aged 11 upwards)
To achieve Bronze, young people take part in an arts activity they enjoy, go to an arts event, research their arts inspiration and share their skills with others.
Silver (aged 11 upwards)
Silver Arts Award, has two units – Unit 1: arts practice and Unit 2: arts leadership. Doing Silver involves achieving an arts challenge, reviewing arts events, researching artists and arts organisations, and delivering an arts leadership project with other people.
Gold (aged 16 upwards) (UCAS Points 35)
Gold Arts Award is the highest level. Young people extend and reflect on their own arts practice, become actively involved in the world of the arts through placements or volunteering and plan, deliver and review an arts project from start to finish.
Young people need to plan their work with an adviser and keep a record by creating their own Arts Award portfolio. Young people can pick their own style of portfolio – this could be a diary, video, website, blog – or something different altogether. This will then be assessed against the required criteria and signed off by an adviser and moderated by an external moderator from Trinity London.
The young people then receive a certificate for the required level. Employers, universities and colleges know that Arts Award is a qualification that shows young people’s level of commitment and progress in the arts, and in developing new skills. There is a lot of independent work required of the young people. They need to make sure they evidence everything they do, learn and lead for the portfolio.

"We chose Arts Awards for our group in Govan as they provided a fantastic structure for documenting our young members journeys. Jonathan White was our first choice for an advisor due his well balanced approach of play and professionalism."
